Synopsis

“Hey. Don’t ever let somebody tell you… You can’t do something.”

“You got a dream… You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period.”

Perseverance

The Pursuit of Happyness- Inspired by the true life story of Chris Gardner. The Pursuit of Happyness is among the most inspiring movies in recent years. A single man (Will Smith) bringing up his young son(Jaden Smith) is reduced to living in train station bathrooms and homeless shelters while attempting to sell overpriced medical equipment to doctors and landing the one available employment position with the brokerage firm Dean Witter Reynolds.

In 1981, in San Francisco, the smart salesman and family man Chris Gardner places the family savings in Osteo National bone-density scanners, an apparatus doubly as expensive as an x-ray machine but with a somewhat clearer image. This white elephant financially breaks the family, bringing difficulties to his relationship with his wife Linda, who leaves him and moves to New York City where she has taken a job in a pizza shop. Their son Christopher stays with Chris because he and his wife both know that he will be able to take better care of him.

Without income or a wife, but committed to his son, Chris sees a opportunity to fight for a stockbroker internship position at Dean Witter, offering a brighter career at the end of a six-month unpaid training period. During that time period, Chris goes through a lot of adversity personally and professionally.

When he thinks he’s “stable,” he finds that he’s lost $600 when the government takes the last bit of money in his bank account for taxes. He’s rendered homeless because he can’t pay his rent. He’s forced to stay in a bathroom at a train station and must scramble from work daily to the Glide Memorial United Methodist Church, which provides shelter to the homeless. He must leave work daily so that he’s there by 5 in the evening along with his son so to be guaranteed of a place to sleep. He’s seen carrying his suitcase to work because he doesn’t have a home. At work, there are 19 other candidates for the one position.

One day, he’s called into an office and in it were the heads of Dean Witter. They tell him that he has been a first-class trainee and that tomorrow will be his 1st day as a broker. Chris struggles to suppress tears. Outside he begins to cry as the busy individuals of San Francisco walk past him. He hurries to his son’s daycare, squeezing him and knowing that everything is going to be o.k.

The concluding scene shows Chris walking with his son down a street. His son is telling him a joke, when a man in a suit walks by. Chris looks backward as the man proceeds on. The man in the suit is none other than the real Chris Gardner.

In spite of the overwhelming trials he had to endure Chris is determined to survive and wins the sole employment position. This movie, Will Smith’s 6 consecutive #1 opening, brought in 27 million dollars in its first weekend.

Synopsis

“Every man dies, not every man really lives.”

“His passion captivated a woman. His courage inspired a nation. His heart defied a king.”

“Freedom”

Passion Inspires

A dramatically inspiring movie about bravery and freedom, Braveheart takes the viewer back to 1300s and introduces them to the legendary Scotsman named William Wallace (Mel Gibson). After his childhood love interest Murron is killed by an English Sheriff, Wallace strikes back and finally starts a revolution against the English people.

William Wallace is a Scottish rebel who leads a rebellion against the cruel English ruler Edward the Longshanks, who wishes to inherit the crown of Scotland for himself. When he was a young boy, William Wallace’s father and brother, along with a lot of others, lost their lives attempting to free Scotland. Once he loses another of his loved ones, William Wallace starts his long quest to make Scotland free once and for all, along with the assistance of Robert the Bruce.

William Wallace is both a bright military strategist and courageous warrior. Although the William Wallace character in the movie really existed, the movie is based on an epic poem called Sir William Wallace, Knight of Elderslie.

The cry for freedom that Wallace brings in at the end of the movie right before his death is potently influential.

Braveheart inspiration in real life: A young boy whose mother has MS led 100s of supporters to the Scottish Parliament to crusade for free vitamin D to help fight the illness. 14 year old Ryan McLaughlin says young children and pregnant women should be given free vitamin D supplements, believing it can help avoid MS after scientific studies suggested a link.

Ryan said he was inspired by Braveheart. He was joined by about two hundred supporters, many of them youngsters, in a march down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile to the Scottish Parliament.

Before putting his case to Holyrood’s petitions committee, he said: “I’m going to parliament to try to give them my insight into how my family’s been affected and that vitamin D is the answer, in my opinion, to get through this.”

William Wallace’s speech in Braveheart about having “just one chance” to make a difference gave him inspiration, he said.
