Compressors
The different varieties of compressors: Hand carry, Gas or Electric
A workshop usually cannot be complete without the presence of compressors, regardless of the type or make and knowing how to identify one depends on preference with the different varieties of compressors available, be it hand carry, gas or electric-powered.
A compressor is basically a mechanical device that builds up the pressure of a gas, commonly using air, by reducing its volume and allowing it to exit through a particular exit point which can be variably controlled.
Simply put, compressors are like pumps, that commonly has distinct purposes which increases the pressure on a fluid allowing it to transport through a pipe or a hose.
As gases are compressible, the compressor also reduces the volume of a gas. Liquids are relatively incompressible, so the main action of a pump is to pressurize and transport liquids.
Compressors are commonly used in various applications where higher pressure is required among which, on the large scale some of, are being used in pipelines to transport purified natural gas from the production site to the consumer.
The compressor for this application is usually generated by a gas turbine fueled by gas from the pipeline and no external power is necessary.
Another industrial use of compressors is in petroleum refineries, petrochemical plants, natural gas processing plants, chemical plants, and other similar large industrial plants that operate on compressing intermediate and end product gases.
