INTRODUCTION
Take a deep breath. Do you know what you just breathed in? Do you think that there was nothing there but the air you need to breathe? Indoor air is clear and, if you are lucky, then it has no discernable unpleasant odor attached to it, but does this mean that the air is clean?
Breathing is something you do unconsciously, and if you want to go on living then you do it regularly. Everyone does it day after day and year after year. Usually, the air that you are breathing in is empty and clear as far as you can see so breathing does not get much thought. True, you may roll up your car windows if you drive into a cloud of dust or if you detect the familiar whiff of some unpleasant smell outside, but other than that you probably do not give much thought to breathing.
There are simply too many other things in life that demand your attention. You do not have time to pay attention to one more, especially when this is one thing that pretty much takes care of itself. After all, you spend most of your time inside and that protects you from all the pollution that is concentrated outside, right?
This begs the question of whether or not you would be able to tell if there was something in the air that you breathe that you do not want to be there. Right now you are probably not sure. You may never have been asked what is in the air you breathe, but not knowing could be affecting you more than you think.
