The Ins and Outs of Sailing

So you want to go sailing? Sailing is a great sport to get into. You can have the pleasure of taking trips all over the place without the hassle of road traffic. You can join with a group of like-minded people and sail in groups or go alone and socialize before and after sailing. Once you learn those special skills that will enable you to sail your boat safely, you will have an incredible amount of fun.

Using wind pressure against sails and water pressure against the underwater part of the keel or hull is how sailing works. If you know nothing about it, you can join a yacht club to learn. Many yacht clubs have open days where the newcomer can try out different sailing boats to see which they like best. You don’t have to own your own boat, but can rent one from the yacht club and also take lessons on how to sail it. You will be able to take the boat out unsupervised once you’ve passed the tests.

If you join a yacht club and get some experience, you may even get to crew a boat for someone to increase your sailing hours; an inexpensive way to enjoy sailing. Some colleges and high schools offer yachting lessons.

There are many different kinds of sailing boats, from the 20-man crew racing yachts to a single man dinghy that costs only a few hundred dollars – and many others in between. There are many types of yachts, and many types of sailing dinghies.

Many recreational sailors prefer dinghy sailing. These smaller boats are ideal for either racing or just having fun sailing, but the skills still need to be learned if those aboard are to remain safe. For racing you will need to have additional skills and a higher skill level than for recreational sailing.

Skiffs, with their flat, narrow hull are the fastest. Cruising dinghies are more suited to family outings due to their greater stability. Their hull is not as rounded and they have less sail in comparison to skiffs. Catamarans are defined as dinghies and are fast with high masts and double hulls.

There are many more sailing boats of various kinds, and some people who are hooked on the sport of racing take their dinghies with them to regattas around the world. Whatever type of sailing you take up, you’ll be sure to make many friends and have fun, which is what such a hobby is all about…
