Early 18th Century
It is believed that the sport of bass fishing was born at around the early 18th century, around 1769, give or take a few years. It all started when a person named Onesimus Ustonson developed and introduced to the angling world his different types of multiplying reels. Anglers, and other people who were very much into fishing, were all hooked on Ustonsons new reels.
Mid 1800’s
During the mid 1800’s, over a century after Ustonson had introduced his reels, artificial lures were then designed and created to be used for bass fishing. These new devices, one of which is a level wind device, took on the shape of an artificial fly. These artificial lures were actually designed based on existing fly patterns from salmon and trout flies. During this period, it was the sustenance anglers used to fish for bass, and they did so for sustenance using live bait and poles instead of the artificial lures.
