How to Select Your Seminar Topic
If you have the ambition to run a seminar, then you want it to be successful. And the way to have a successful seminar is to choose a topic that everyone is interested in. But how can you know what will be the most popular topic? Surveys are a great way to find this out.
Normally, you don’t just choose a topic at random and run a seminar on it. It will be in your area of interest or knowledge. For instance, you may be into real estate and would like to show people how they can buy a home instead of renting. You need to get some insight into why people rent instead of buying. So asking them via a telephone survey would be a good idea.
You can guess that people rent instead of buying because they don’t have a down payment or because the interest rates are too high. But you may be surprised to also learn that many people rent because of job insecurity. They may expect to have to move quickly if they lose their present job. Or they may need to move along with the job. So if they had bought a house, they would then need to sell it quickly and all sorts of hassles would arise.
Great seminar topics can be found in those areas of immediate concern on the news. But they must also be of interest to you, or you won’t have that spark it takes to make a good seminar really great. So select a topic that interests you. You should also have some kind of experience in your chosen topic – if you are an expert, so much the better.
While a telephone survey can be a good way of getting information for your topic, there are many other means of market research. You can perform an online market research, or you can design a questionnaire and mail it to the householder. When doing your own questionnaires it is important to make sure the questions are short and relevant. And the brochure itself should be short, because many people simply won’t expend the effort to fill out one that is long and complicated. It should also have an eye-catching title that addresses a need.
Remember that certain questions – e.g. asking about income details – can be offensive; so take care in forming your questions. You can also hire a company to do your market research if your budget will stretch that far…
