Hello “autoresponder code here”,
In the last issue we talked about some of the growing concerns
about sleep disorders. In this issue we are going to talk about
one of the most common sleep disorders, insomnia.
One of the most common complaints that you will hear from an
insomniac is that they are unable to close their eyes or rest their
mind for more than a few minutes at a time.
There are many reasons for this ranging from anxiety to bipolar
disorder. Yet sometimes there’s no real cause and it can just
happen for no apparent reason. Sometimes too much activity.
physical pain or not eating properly can be an underlying reason
for someone that is not able to sleep at night.
Finding the underlying cause is key to finding a cure for any sleep
disorder.
There are 3 types of insomnia :
– Transient insomnia
Transient insomnia lasts only a few nights. It is often caused by jet
lag, stress, excitement, illness, or a change in your sleep
schedule.
– Short-term insomnia
Short-term insomnia lasts up to as long as three weeks. It often
results from more extreme or prolonged stress, such as financial
troubles, death, job change, family issues or divorce. If not treated,
short-term insomnia may turn into a more chronic problem.
– Chronic insomnia
Chronic insomnia, also known as long-term insomnia, lasts more
than a month. It can occur every night, most nights, or several
nights each month. Chronic insomnia is often caused by a medical
problem; treating the underlying problem will often alleviate the
insomnia.
Bad sleep habits may also lead to any of the forms of insomnia
that I’ve listed above. There are options to treat insomnia. The
most common is medicinal. With new developments in drug
therapies such as Ambien, Ambien CR (Controlled Release) ,
Rozerem, and Lunesta used for treating many sleep disorders.
Just keep in mind that not all medications will be suitable for your
problem. Some of the medications that are used in treatment of
insomnia have been proven effective in helping insomniacs wake
and sleep at the right time, but finding the one that will work for you
may not be as easy as one trip to the doctor’s office.
If your insomnia is mild, you may want to try herbs like chamomile
added to tea as a drink before bed and lavender aromatherapy
which has been known to aid relaxation, before you make your first
trip to the doctor’s office. Another thing to keep in mind is that a
magnesium deficiency can also lead to insomnia and getting the
right amount of magnesium in your diet has been proven through
studies to improve the quality of a person’s sleeping patterns.
Pomegranates are also good for insomniacs since there’s a
nutrient in the fruit key for everything from immunity to
cardiovascular health and are good for improving sleep.
When you’re suffering with insomnia it is important that you do your
best to eliminate as much stress and tension from your life as
possible, because it will often trigger bouts of insomnia. Chinese
medicine has also been introduced into helping those with
sleeping disorders and other issues surrounding it.
According to statistics taken from the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services it’s estimated that 40% of women and 30%
of men suffer from some type of insomnia. That is 60 million
people in America alone.
Make sure you look for your next issue soon. We will be talking
more about some of the medications that are used to treat
sleep disorders.

The combination of always feeling tired and the symptoms
themselves can cause a person with restless leg syndrome to alter
their lifestyle. Long trips, movies, concerts and eating in
restaurants are some of the activities they usually avoid. Attending
a long meeting at work can become very painful and
uncomfortable. People that have this sleep disorder often suffer
from depression.
————————————
This is why when a job or school schedules changes it’s ideal to
give yourself adequate time to make the adjustment so that it
doesn’t throw you off physically, so you’re able to wake up and
retire at a reasonable time so you can make it to work and school
on time.
————————————
However, there are several other methods of treatment for this
sleep disorder. Behavioral treatments include meditation,
progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, visualization,
biofeedback, sleep hygiene, cognitive behavioral therapy and
reconditioning sleep restriction. These methods are often very
successful.
————————————
Although the cause of food related sleep disorder is not known,
several triggers have been identified. Medications such as lithium,
a mood stabilizer, and the benzodiazepine receptor zolpidem are
two of those triggers. People with mood and personality disorders
or psychological problems such as bulimia are at higher risk of
developing one of these food related sleep disorders. People
suffering from other sleep disorders including insomnia, sleep
apnea, periodic limb movement disorder or narcolepsy are also at
higher risk.
————————————
Treatment for adults with this sleep disorder is often dependent
upon the amount of danger they are in during an episode. For
example, a sleepwalker who opens doors and goes outside onto
a busy city street is in danger. A sleepwalker that gets up and
goes into the living room and sits down on a chair most likely is
not in danger. Treatments can include behavioral therapies, self
hypnosis, or prescription medication.
