What is Cholera?
About the Term
The term for cholera has been known to be derived from a Greek word that means the roof’s gutter, like an overflow of water after a heavy run, and eventually was used to refer to the anus of a person who has an infection. Cholera is a severe bacterial infection with the pathogen called Vibrio Cholerae that mainly targets the small intestine.
Cholera Hallmarks: Signs and Symptoms
The hallmark for this disease is profuse watery diarrhea and vomiting. It is transmitted by the ingestion of this pathogen through contaminated water or infected food. The symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting start suddenly, usually in one to five days after the infection begins. The severity of this profuse watery diarrhea and vomiting can lead to severe dehydration and electrolyte loss. If not attended to immediately, death may follow.
People who are infected with cholera have this highly liquid diarrhea, also referred to as “rice-watery stool”. The feces is highly rich with bacteria that may infect the water that is used by other people by contaminating it with feces or other sewage substances.
