What Is Bronchitis?
Bronchitis is actually the inflammation of the mucous membranes of a particular person’s bronchi. These are the paths that the air passes in order to carry airflow from the trachea and into the lungs.
Although there is constant research going on about bronchitis, this respiratory tract ailment still has two forms to date, namely, acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis. Each of these two forms has their own causes, disease processes, and treatment modalities.
About acute bronchitis
Acute bronchitis kicks off with cough. It can either be productive or non-productive, the former meaning the presence of sputum is observed in the expectorated mucus. This form of bronchitis usually only occurs during the course of a separate viral illness like influenza or the common cold. Although this may sound unlikely, viruses actually cause around ninety percent of the cases of acute bronchitis while bacteria only cause less than ten percent.
About chronic bronchitis
Chronic bronchitis is a form of obstructive pulmonary disease that is characterized by productive cough. The cough usually lasts for at least three months in a year in around two years.
