1. How to Identify Business Opportunities

What is a business opportunity? It can be defined as any kind of business proposal that an entrepreneur would like to proceed with after considering the risk and the compensation concerned. Such an opportunity could be related to a business offering trading, servicing or manufacturing services.

Business people in general and most of the industrialists identify a business opportunity based on the following three criteria:

• You want to do it because your father or a relative is doing it successfully.
• You have related experience, therefore you are chasing this opportunity
• You know a person who is doing it successfully and are inspired to do the same.

The number of sellers will be more than buyers if those lines of thinking continue. It has already led to unhealthy competition. In order to resolve this problem, there is a scientific way to identify business opportunities. The opportunity is classified in any of the following nine categories when its user, origin, source and application are taken into account. The categories are:

• Skill based
• Resource based
• Demand based
• Supplementary / vendor
• Primary sector inputs
• Secondary sector inputs
• Tertiary sector inputs
• Waste based
• Inventive

The descriptions are as follows:

Skill based:
These are the opportunities in industries where skills are used. They are used to manufacture various goods and services. For example, generally a group of carpenters are engaged in the manufacturing of wooden furniture to meet the local demand. They can also be encouraged to produce industrial products, electrical accessories etc.
